New recycling plant planned A court-appointed receiver says it will seek a buyer for the Entropex plastics recycling company that ceased operations Thursday after bankers called its loans. The move impacted 155 employees at the company on Lougar Street in Sarnia, that has been in operation since 1978. “Hopefully, we can find somebody who's interested in buying it and resurrecting the company,” said Rob Smith, with the London office of MNP Ltd., a receiver appointed by the court. Most of the Entropex employees “were terminated by the company as soon as the receivership happened,” Smith said. “We'll keep a few people around to help us do the things that we need to do.” That includes dealing with accounting issues, and packaging and shipping some final product, Smith said. “It's a list we're trying to finalize today,” he said Friday. “I don't know a firm number, right now.” A press release issued by Entropex Thursday said it had been struggling for several months with financial challenges caused by declining oil prices and a competitive business environment.

The release said the company had worked to reduce expenses but the cost of operating remained “prohibitively high and unsustainable.” According to the company's website, it operated a 180,000-square-foot plastic recovery facility and warehouse complex in Sarnia. “We have to move as quickly as we possibly can,” Smith said about the work of the receiver. “If we can find somebody who's interested in buying the business en bloc and resurrecting the business, the sooner we can get a sale done, the better.” Smith said they will be preparing material to market and sell the company, seek court approval for the process, and then ask for bids. That process is expected to take four to six weeks, and any offer the receiver recommends must be approved by the court, he said. In 2009, Entropex received $6.3 million in funding from federally-funded Sustainable Development Technology Canada for a demonstration facility to recover mixed rigid plastics, such as clam shell packaging, from waste streams.
