The city of Seal Beach and The Original Fish Company, which the city chose last year to open a new restaurant at the pier, have ended negotiations, city officials said. munity Development Director Jim Basham said Monday that the city isn’t negotiating with anyone to open a restaurant there. The popular Los Alamitos eatery had proposed opening Off the Hook to replace Ruby’s, which closed in early 2013. In April, the city announced it had selected The Original Fish Company over another contender, MDK Restaurant Developers. That company had proposed a “beachy elegant” restaurant named Sand Castle, while Off the Hook was to have a bar, an oyster bar, an outdoor patio and entertainment, the owners said at the time. Local community groups such as the Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club and Run Seal Beach showed support for The Original Fish Company’s plan.Vanessa Rothman-Travis, a Seal Beach resident and half of the mother-daughter duo that own The Original Fish Company, declined to comment on negotiations except to say that everything is on hold.
It is too soon to tell when a restaurant will open at the location, Basham said. Before one can open there, a structural analysis of the pier must be completed. However, he said the falling out with The Original Fish Company wasn’t related to recent delays in completing the analysis. The city conducts such an assessment every five years or so to measure whether sea water has deteriorated the wooden structures, Basham said. Last year, Hurricane Marie damaged the pier and was one of a series of storms that passed through the area, postponing the pier’s needed assessment, he said.Deaton said the structural damage done by Hurricane Marie had to be repaired before the full structural analysis could be done. The report is expected to be completed this month, she said. The Seal Beach public works department and Long Beach-based engineering firm Moffatt & Nichol are conducting the analysis, Basham said.
