Read MoreMUMBAI: Tata Communications, the world's largest carrier of international calls as well as the largest owner of submarine cables, has started the process to sell its data centre business for more than $500 million, or Rs 3,200 crore plus. The company plans to raise cash to help pare its debt, people directly familiar with the matter said. The $3.2-billion Tata Communications is said to have hired American investment bank Jefferies to find suitors for the data centre business across 44 locations in India and abroad. Strategic players like NTT and private equity funds like Providence and Advent could show interest in the data centre unit, which has $150-million revenue and $40 million in operating profit, said people in the know. Besides India, Tata Communications has data centres in the US, the UK and Singapore, with over 1 million sq ft of co-location space, offering managed hosting and storage services.

Soaring data usage and enterprises choosing to increasingly outsource IT infrastructure services, as also move to cloud computing, have fuelled the third-party data centre businesses. The valuation multiples of M&A deals in data centres have fetched at least 12 to 15 times on forward ebitda, which could peg the valuation of the Tata Communications unit at anywhere between $500 million and $750 million. The numbers would depend on a mix of the revenue, headroom for capacity expansion and clientele. Tata Communications is the latest to hit the auction block with its data centre business after US-based Telx and AT&T in recent months. Tata Communications MD Vinod Kumar is pursuing efficiency measures, cutting costs and selling assets to improve the company's balance sheet. The proposed sale of the unit will be the organization's second major divestment after the recent sale of its South African telecom unit Neotel to Vodacom for $565 million. In response to a query regarding the potential sale of data centres, a Tata Communications spokesperson said, "The company is highly tuned in to business growth opportunities.
