The ACCC has identified potential concerns in a range of local markets," he said. "These concerns are particularly strong in Sans Souci and Sutherland in NSW, and Casey in the ACT where Supabarn is to open its largest store.ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the ACCC had an important role ensuring a healthy level of completion in the marketplace."This is a difficult issue though given the owners of Supabarn have declared their reason for wishing to sell is personal rather than commercial," he said. A Supabarn spokeswoman said the company would review the statement and "looked forward to resolving any issues with the ACCC". The commission received close to 60 submissions from consumers and held a forum in Canberra last month to discuss the proposed acquisition. Mr Sims said the commission understood Supabarn was the only full-line supermarket chain in the ACT other than Coles and Woolworths."The ACCC recognises that Supabarn has a differentiated offer to that of the other supermarkets and understands that this is valued by consumers," he said."
The ACCC is considering the proposed acquisition as a whole as well as its effect on local markets surrounding each target store."A Coles spokesman said the company would continue to work with the ACCC to address all issues raised in the statement. "Coles is seeking to purchase the nine stores in Canberra and Sydney on a leasehold basis and if cleared by the ACCC, Coles will offer all existing Supabarn store employees an opportunity to continue working in their store for Coles," he said. "Coles also plans to invest $30 million in store improvements and create around 200 new jobs in the local communities."The Master Grocers Association, an industry group that represents independent grocery and liquor stores, has opposed the sale despite describing Supabarn as a valued member. If the sale is approved the deal would affect the the Civic, Wanniassa, Kaleen and Crace stores, as well as a new Casey store currently under construction. In NSW, stores at Five Dock, Sutherland, Annandale and Sans Souci would also be sold.
