First he earned their trust. Then slowly he began taking items from an elderly Holiday City couple, over a period of months, Police Chief Karin T. DiMichele said. They didn't notice at first. But he is accused of escalating the thefts, stealing jewelry, prescription medication and credit cards, the chief said. Berkeley police began investigating the series of thefts during the week of Oct. 15. On Oct. 26, they arrested Daniel Greco, 52, Costa Mesa Drive, from the Holiday City section of the township, DiMichele said. "Greco was able to gain the trust of his victims who relied on him for daily assistance," the chief said. "Greco would take items while in the home and he would later sell them for cash."
Detectives conducted an intense follow-up and were able to link and charge Greco with three separate thefts from senior citizens in his community, DiMichele said. Greco was taken into custody without incident and taken to police headquarters. He was later taken to the Ocean County Jail in Toms River in lieu of $5,000 bail. More charges are expected as the investigation continues. "Residents are reminded to verify anyone that they use or let in their home to include handymen and other solicitors and contractors," DiMichele said. "They all must be registered with township and in some cases with the state. Specific information about contractor fraud and senior fraud are always available at the Berkeley Township Police Department." DiMichele urged neighbor, friends and concerned citizens who live in senior communities to report all suspicious activity to police. "Crimes against senior citizens are of particular concern because they often go unreported," she said.
