Residents who are 65 years old and older and live in Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Mount Prospect, Palatine or Rolling Meadows can now apply for help.The seniors get subsidized services and pay for up to two hours of home repairs and maintenance by a licensed professional.

Small projects such as repairing a sink, toilet or ceiling fan are acceptable as well as things like smoke alarms, hanging pictures or curtains and putting up shelves."It's simple kinds of things that people who are 65 and older sometimes can't do," said Robyn Sandys, executive director of the North West Housing Partnership.The partnership is administering the program and will be paid $10,000 by the Northwest Suburban Housing Collaborative for the pilot year.The collaborative is using $20,000 from a Chicago Community Trust grant to fund the program. The other half of the money will be used to subsidize the services.The seniors will pay either $10, $20 or $30 per hour, depending on the senior's self-reported income. The handyman bills for $35 per hour, Sandys said."It's the honor system, because Rolling Meadows did that and it wasn't really a problem," Sandys said. "It's self-reported and we just hope people are honest."The village of Rolling Meadows previously operated a smaller-scale handyman program and the collaborative decided to expand throughout the area, said Nora Boyer, the housing planner for the village of Arlington Heights who also oversees the collaborative.

This is one of the first joint programs for the collaborative, which was created in 2011 to address housing issues in the northwest suburbs."There are some (projects) lending themselves to working together ... so we aren't duplicating across the collaborative," Boyer said.A report commissioned by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus from November 2013 indicated there were 3,685 units or beds for seniors in the collaborative's boundaries, including in nursing homes and affordable and market-rate housing.A total of 2,296 of them are in Arlington Heights, while Mount Prospect has 412, Buffalo Grove has 377, Palatine has 373 and Rolling Meadows has 227.Boyer said the collaborative will continue to seek grant funding to keep the program going if it's successful but did not rule out pursuing or using city money in the future."From the people I talk to, they do think it's a need," Boyer said.
