He returned my calls thereafter, to answer more questions. He was very nice and welcomed me to call him anytime. On the day of the job, he and his partner arrived on time. Their job was to cut the door to fit, and then install it, the door hardware, a pet door, and a peep hole. And also, to replace the threshold. I supplied the materials. When asked, he predicted a completion time of 2-3 hours but gave me a set maximum price beyond which it would not go. The door planing went well however they cut off a little too much on the sides, just to make sure it would fit. The pet door installation was noticeably slanted up on one side, by 1/2", but it could not be redone. When I pointed it out to them, they didn't comment. While the threshold was installed well, the door was rubbing on the right side, making a squeaky sound... I opened the door in front of them but they made no comment. There also was a new slice in the wood veneer but they did not mention it. The job took over 4 hours and at the very end, Vince handed me the strikeplate hardware while I was asking about something else.

He didn't say anything and I didn't notice that it had not been put back on the door casing until after they had left. Overall, the job was pretty satisfactory for a reasonable price. I called Vince back in a few days and asked him if he would return to install the strike plate. He was nice, said he would, and came back in a few weeks and installed a new one. Although I've had to file down the bottom of the door myself, to stop the squeaking, overall I'm happy for the results I got for the price I paid. The door looks good and functions properly. I recommend American Handyman to anyone who needs a job done at a reasonable price even though there were some slight errors in judgement. I found him to be very pleasant and believe he put his heart into the work. He kept his word and guaranteed his work for a reasonable period of time.
