Watch the video below to see just how many he managed to do!The handyman accused of killing nine-year-old Laura Kane was yesterday found guilty of her rape and murder. There were cheers from the public gallery as the jury returned its verdicts after four hours of deliberation at Newcastle crown court. Colin Bainbridge, 35, a trusted family friend, was found guilty of raping and murdering Laura at his home in Murton, County Durham, last August, after luring her away from her home. He claimed she had died after an innocent game of Cowboys and Indians had gone tragically wrong. Bainbridge, had been working at the Kane home in Penshaw, near Sunderland, on the day he abducted her.

He took Laura to his house, then raped and murdered her before burying her body under the living room floor and going out for a drink with Laura's mother Carol. Her body lay undetected for 10 days - and Bainbridge kept in regular touch with Laura's anguished family during the search. Detective Superintendent Steve Bolam, of Northumbria Police, who led the inquiry, described Bainbridge as a Walter Mitty character who lied to numerous people to gain their friendship. "I think that he took Laura away with a sexual motive and once that had taken place he killed her to hide his tracks," he said. "He continued life as normal which shows how cold and calculating he was." Bainbridge sat impassively in the dock as the jury returned its verdicts. Laura's friends and family cheered and wept in the public gallery, also crying for Laura's grandfather who died on Tuesday. When Laura, who was described by friends as "outgoing and friendly", went missing in August last year, it prompted a huge police operation.

During the search Bainbridge was questioned by police several times because he had been plastering an attic room at the Kane home shortly before she disappeared. He persistently lied to police officers until 10 days after her disappearance he was arrested and Laura's partly decomposed body was found under the floorboards of his living room. Bainbridge - whose girlfriend of nine years had recently given birth to a son - admitted to police she had died at his home but said that it was an accident. She suffocated while bound and gagged during an innocent game of Cowboys and Indians, he claimed. On the eighth day of the trial the jury returned a unanimous verdict on a charge of murder and a majority verdict on the charge of rape. Mr Justice Nelson reserved sentence until Monday after stating the case was one in which he would need to consider imposing a recommendation on how long Bainbridge should serve before being considered for release. Speaking outside the court Mrs Kane told reporters: "I think that the jury today has come to the right conclusion but I'm a bit sad he hasn't got the sentence.
