Highway 144, from Chelmsford to Cartier, will have a spiffy new surface by the time the first snowflakes fly, thanks to the sale of part of Hydro One. The province announced on Tuesday it is contributing $3.2 billion from the sale of the hydro giant to the Trillium Trust, which is used to finance infrastructure projects.
"Ontario has dedicated $3.2 billion from the sale of Hydro One shares in 2015 to the Trillium Trust, a fund for infrastructure projects that will help create jobs and strengthen the economy," The Liberals announced in a press release. "This follows on the government's 2015 budget and fall economic statement commitment to dedicate all net revenue gains from the sale of Hydro One shares to the Trillium Trust, to build key vital, long-term infrastructure projects and transportation across Ontario." In Sudbury, several projects have gotten the green light from the Trillium Trust. The four-laning of Highway 69 has been expanded and three schools have gotten rehabilitation work, including Holy Trinity Elementary School, St. Charles College and St. David Elementary School. There has also been work on Highway 144. Gordan Rennie, a regional issues and media advisor for the Ministry of Transportation, said it was important to rehabilitate the corridor, which links Timmins and Sudbury.
"Highway 144 is a key transportation corridor in northeastern Ontario linking Timmins and Greater Sudbury. The current construction projects are part of a multi-year rehabilitation of the corridor to improve the condition of the pavement and bridges," he explained. "Since 2003, the ministry has invested more than $107 million to repave 228 km, and to improve nine bridges and four structural culverts of Highway 144. The final sections under construction in 2015 and 2016 will help complete our rehabilitation of the highway from Highway 101 to Chelmsford." Currently, Interpaving is working on two parts of the road, including an 18-km stretch from Levack to Cartier and a 12-km section from Dowling to Levack. Both projects are underway and should be complete later this year. A 19.5-km stretch running between Chelmsford and Levack was completed last fall, Rennie said. Pioneer Construction completed the project. The Liberals maintain the sale of Hydro One will benefit Ontarians.
"Ontario is on track to generate approximately $9 billion in gross proceeds and other revenue benefits from broadening the ownership of Hydro One, while remaining the largest single shareholder," they say in the release. "Taxpayers continue to benefit from dividends in the company, allowing the government to increase investments in infrastructure programs such as GO Transit Regional Express Rail and the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund without further raising taxes, increasing debt or cutting public services." Sudbury MPP Glenn Thibeault, the provincial energy minister, said the sale of Hydro One will be good for the economy. "By broadening the ownership of Hydro One and remaining the largest shareholder, we are investing in new roads, bridges, transit, schools and hospitals in communities in every corner of Ontario," he said Tuesday. "The unprecedented scale of Ontario's infrastructure investment will grow our economy and create good jobs today and tomorrow." 705 674 5271 ext. 505235
