Alan says: "All our friends and family said we must be crazy, but we knew what we wanted to do from the start of this journey, we had a clear objective." And that mission is to establish and build a successful glamping business within the 28 acres of their new home's grounds in order to pay for a programme of restoration works of the Felin Geri mill .
The original historic and locally important mill near Newcastle Emlyn in Ceredigion , originally part of the Lloyd of Cilgwyn estate, is thought to have been built in the 1500s and was first officially recorded as a working flour mill in 1610. business for sale ajax pickeringThe mill is named after the River Ceri and its tributary that has provided the power to the mill to grind corn until its closure as a business venture in 1991. business for sale devon tea roomsThe current building is a small water-powered flour mill, altered or rebuilt in 1805 by Thomas Lloyd and Admiral Richard Braithwaite. handyman jobs in orange county caIn 1879 a saw mill was developed alongside the flour mill which is now just ruins. property pro handyman service ct
But at that time two water wheels running next to each other was a most unusual sight. Gradually the saw mill became more important and by the 1950s there was virtually no corn being milled and what was produced was used mostly for animal feed. homestead handyman serviceHaving been auctioned in 1972 the mill was fully restored to save it from total dereliction by 1975, with some of the building being taken down and rebuilt. handyman services orange park flFelin Geri was then opened to the public as a working flour mill and tourist attraction. The Prince of Wales presented Felin Geri with a European Architectural Heritage Award in 1975 in recognition of the faithful restoration of the mill. With tea rooms and a Japanese restaurant it was a successful enterprise for a number of years but then fell into disrepair again in the 1990s.
Since moving from Plymouth to West Wales in 2007, Alan and Jane have been working on a viable business plan and securing planning permission to generate the funds to restore the mill and its grounds and to realise their vision for the site. Alan says: "We want to bring the site back into the community, as it once was. We definitely aim to grind corn again for historic and educational purposes and maybe use the water wheel as an alternative energy source." The result of the couple's hard work over the years is a peaceful, rural glamping site with beautiful luxury safari lodge tents, supplied from Somerset based company Boldscan , for up to six guests to enjoy in each unit. Alan says: "We wanted the tents to blend into the landscape and give the feel of an intrepid camping trip but with added luxuries, including en-suite showers, wood burning stoves and comfy beds." The lodge tents have a separate king size double bedroom, twin bedded room and a Scottish cabin bed for two to ensure luxurious sleeping accommodation.
Quality linen, duvets and towels are all provided. There is a shower room and toilet in each tent and hot water is provided by a wood fired boiler. Guests can order locally sourced produce in advance of their visit to Felin Geri which will be ready for arrival and each tent has a cool box and freezer blocks to keep daily supplies cold. The Mill Cafe and Bar is on-site for breakfast, light lunches and a range of refreshing drinks and if guests really can't tear themselves away from their smart phones, there is free Wi-Fi in the bar. The location of the lodge tents is ideal for a relaxing break, being sited within a Site of Special Scientific Interest and the area is teaming with wildlife. The River Ceri runs along the mill site's border with fishing rights along its banks. Felin Geri has its own enchanting woodland and also access to bridle paths for guests wanting to tackle a more challenging hike. Alan and Jane can even provide guests with a telescope to gaze at the night sky from the veranda of their tent, as light pollution is not a problem in this rural corner of West Wales.
And if the glamping tents are just too luxurious for guests, the couple can provide a two person tent and a BBQ for some 'rough' camping away from the main site. The mill site also has a treehouse and adventure 'fort' for children, archery equipment and an activity shed for any rainy days. Alan and Jane have planning permission for 12 lodge tents and intend to build up the business to that level over the next few years. The couple also have exciting plans to extend the cafe and bar and convert some of the numerous outbuildings. The site is already welcoming weddings in a marquee within the pretty mill grounds, which can also be used for conferences. After the Grade II* listed mill has been renovated the next target is to restore the weir and apply to Cadw to have it listed. It's a long-term project that has ignited the passion within the family, with 13 year old son Joseph already part of the team, helping out with maintenance, construction and catering. The Felin Geri glamping site has been open for just a month and bookings are already coming in.
