The plantations company said on Wednesday its revenue increased by 39.2% to RM4.33bil from RM3.11bil. Earnings per share were 74.7 sen compared with 20.1 sen a year ago. KLK said its pre-tax profit improved significantly to RM911.1mil from RM294.3mil which had accounted for a surplus of RM485.7mil arising from the sale of plantation land.

It said the plantations profit climbed 12.8% to RM273mil from RM242.1mil a year ago due to better selling prices of palm kernel and rubber, higher crop production of both fresh fruit bunches and rubber. It also benefited from improved contributions from refineries and kernel crushing plants. However, there was an unrealised loss of RM2.1mil compared with an unrealised gain RM26.3mil from the fair value changes on outstanding derivative contracts. On the outlook, KLK said the prevailing palm oil prices may improve due to the anticipated low production cycle and the expected increase in bio-diesel consumption in Indonesia. “However, the weak economic outlook, ample supply of oilseeds and stagnating demand from China due to high soybean crushing may hold back any sharp rise in palm oil price. In view of these factors, the outlook for the plantation sector remains challenging for the current financial year,” it said. KLK cautioned that the oleochemical division continues to face the slowdown in demand and a competitive market environment.

However, it anticipated to achieve favourable results through initiatives of operational efficiency, productivity enhancement and additional capacities from key expansion plants coming fully on-stream. * KLK's parent company Batu Kawan Bhd also reported on Wednesday a strong Q1 earnings growth.
