ELGIN is expecting a major Christmas surge with confirmation that an ice rink will be set up in the town centre. One of only four across Scotland made from real ice, it will be in place on the Plainstones from December 17 to January 7. The bulk of its costs have been paid by local businesses and organisations, who are confident that it will attract enough extra shoppers into the town to more than pay its way. In addition, the town received two extra festive boosts this week. Firstly, Elgin’s free parking scheme is set to be extended this festive season. From next Saturday onwards – the day the town’s Christmas lights are being switched on – shoppers will be able to park in the Batchen Street and St Giles car parks free of charge after 3pm.
