This project has been the subject of extensive planning, design and construction by the department over a number of years. In 2004, the department commenced the Bruce Highway - Cooroy to Curra Strategic Planning Study. The study also considered potential locations of interchanges linking to local roads. The following highway sections were chosen for construction purposes: Section A: Cooroy southern interchange to Sankeys Road. Section B: Sankeys Road to Traveston Road. Section C: Traveston to Woondum. Section D: Woondum to Curra, including the Gympie bypass.
