This project involves a 62km upgrade and realignment of the Bruce Highway between Cooroy and Curra, including a bypass of Gympie, and is among Queensland's highest priority road projects. It is designed to meet strategic transport needs of the Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions well into the future. For construction purposes the project is being delivered in 4 sections: Section A: Cooroy southern interchange to Sankeys Road Section B: Sankeys Road to Traveston Road Section C: Traveston to Woondum Section D: Woondum to Curra, including the Gympie bypass. Work on Section A commenced in July 2013 and is expected to be completed in early 2017, weather permitting. Section B (constructed first for safety reasons) Work started on Section B in July 2009 with the completion of major works and highway commissioning occurring in December 2012. Construction is underway and expected to be complete by mid-2018, weather permitting.

Preliminary planning commenced in March 2014 and was completed in early 2016. Detailed Design began in May 2016 and it is anticipated to be complete by early-2018. Construction of Section D is subject to funding. This upgrade will separate long distance from local traffic movements to allow the highway to function as a high-speed, high-volume corridor. In 2004, the department commenced the Bruce Highway - Cooroy to Curra Strategic Planning Study. Activities have included committee meetings, public displays, information sessions, meetings with project stakeholders, businesses, property owners and residents, distribution of maps and newsletters and other communication methods. The SPS report recommended a proposed corridor for the project which was refined to incorporate community feedback. The refined option was released publicly in August 2008 and further detailed planning, design and construction work has taken place since this time on each individual section of the project.
