We are planning to stay in Cessnock and then want to travel to Dubbo on our way to Canberra but are a bit concerned as to the road conditions to get there whilst towing our caravan. Any advice would be much appreciated. What are you concerned about? The Golden Highway to Dubbo is a good sealed road. From Dubbo take the Mitchell Highway to Molong, then head to Canowindra, Cowra and the Lachlan Valley Way through Boorowa to the Hume Highway, and take the Barton Highway to Canberra. It's all sealed, a bit boring around Boorowa but no dramas for a caravan. Yes, it's a good road. But if you're towing a van it's vastly easier and quicker to drive down the M1 to Sydney and then via Pennant Hills Road, M2, M7 and M5 to the Hume Highway and on to Canberra that way. we have driven that same rout e quite a fe w times and its a narrower road than the main highwa s but we always felt that the less traffic made it easier to drive , and its quite a pretty route most of the way too, little place s to stop off for a snack or coffee.
Personally I would prefer the Golden Way rather than trying to take a caravan through Sydney. Might be a bit slower but in Sydney you would have to plan your times so as to miss the peak hour traffic. By the sound of it, Happy Traveller wants to go to Dubbo anyway, so the Sydney route is probably not an option.
