"It's the hardest decision I've made in my life."I'm just so grateful for the five generations that have been coming in, and their dedication and support for our family and their love for our product," she added.Joseph Axtin, the original Coney Joe, opened the coney-dog joint on the northwest corner of West Grand River Avenue and Main Street in 1972.A 1977 Brighton High School graduate, Axtin-Bredow purchased the restaurant from her father's estate after he passed away in 1994.

She has worked there since she was 13. Her three sisters — Deb Taylor, Cathy Ventura and Colleen Wolicki — have also worked there.The restaurant is now open only Mondays through Fridays. Axtin-Bredow decided to close Saturdays and Sundays this summer to spend more time with her grandson, Mason Marshall. A judge recently granted Axtin-Bredow custody of her grandson every other weekend. The boy lost his father (Axtin-Bredow's son), Justin Marshall, two years ago.Axtin-Bredow said she wants to enjoy life more after spending the past 22 years running the business. Her plan is to sell the building and Coney Joe's as a package or separately by January 2017. The restaurant will remain open until a sale is finalized.Axtin-Bredow expects to have up to 90 days to move out if she sells the building first, which is on the market for $485,000. She may someday open a hot-dog trailer or cart, she said."I'd like to wrap things up this fall," Axtin-Bredow said. "I just need to get out from underneath this building."

Cheryl Perkins, a Coney Joe's employee from 1988-1996, returned in March to help in the kitchen. She now cooks, serves and works the counter for up to 40 hours a week.Perkins blamed the possible sale on the lack of parking near the restaurant. Most people, she said, park their cars to shop downtown, leaving the lot full and potential customers thinking Coney Joe's is full."I think it sucks because of the parking situation," she said. "Everybody takes the parking here to go to other restaurants."At 6 o'clock this parking lot is filled and people think that we're busy because of the parking lot being full," she added. "We used to make a good income when we had parking."Ron Moir, owner and president Livingston Lending, the only tenant in the building, said he didn't get advance notice of the possible sale. He said one of his employees noticed  the "for-sale" sign and brought it to his attention Monday.Moir, a county resident since 1976, is already looking for another location for his business.

He has not had a lease for the past seven or eight years, he said, but has always paid his rent. He cannot afford the asking price for the building."I'm kind of scrambling," he said Friday. "To find out that way, it's kind of a like a slap in the face."I've always paid my rent," he added.
